Acton-Boxborough Community Outreach (ABCO)

Meets alternate Thursdays at 2:30 in the Counseling Center.
Acton-Boxborough Community Outreach (ABCO) undertakes group community service projects that
address local and regional needs and encourages volunteer involvement for all A-B students.
AB Buddies
Ms. Chu - Counseling, Ms. Morgan - Special Education
Meets once a month on Wednesdays at 7:00 a.m in the Counseling Center.
AB Buddies is an organization helping to increase social opportunities for students in mainstream
and special education classes by matching them in one-to-one pairs during the school year. New
friendships can develop by "hanging out" together on a regular basis. Open to all students in grades
9-12. Students may join AB Buddies after an introductory meeting and the completion of a
standard application.
AB Funk and Soul (Hip Hop Club)
Ms. Carp - Social Studies
Meets Thursdays at 2:30 in Student Center East.
This group is open to all students interested in breakdancing or working on their hip hop moves. It
is for both experts and beginners ... anyone can come and learn. Boys and girls are welcome!!!
Members focus on learning some routines and preparing for performances! Students candrop in at
any time, although a more permanent commitment is encouraged.
AB Human Rights
Ms. Ervick and Mr McHale- Social Studies
Meets Mondays at 2:30 in 228E.
AB Human Rights is a group devoted to fighting human rights abuses around the world. The group
is affiliated with Amnesty International which works to raise awareness of human rights issues,
focusing on prisoners of conscience (individuals imprisoned solely on the basis of their beliefs or
ethnic origin). Group meetings focus on letter writing, discussions, fund raising and specific
cases.Open to all interested students.
Ambassadors

The Ambassadors Program has multiple purposes at AB, including the pairing of a junior or senior
with an incoming freshman to help him or her adjust to the high school's environment.
Ambassadors also assist on Back to School Night and College Night, and help with the Freshman
Orientation Day; this first day of school is now especially designed around the freshman and new
students to help them find their way around the school and meet their new teachers,
administration, and other staff before the rest of the 2000 students begin their first day.
Anime Crew

The Anime Crew is a group that gathers to view and discuss a variety of Japanese anime.
Art Club
Ms. Mackay - Visual Arts
Meets Tuesdays at 2:30 in 272W.
Members of the art club will be provided with opportunities to be involved in community service
learning experiences, a few structured challenges and free choice opportunities to create personal
works of art. There is a $15.00 materials fee to cover necessary supplies.
ASHA for Education
Ms. Hammond - World Language
Meets alternate Tuesdays at 2:30 in 102E.
Asha, which means “hope” in Hindi, is a school organization raising awareness about South Asian
culture around A-B. The group’s activities include film screenings, fundraisers and an afternoon
chai to connect with the South Asian community in the area and ultimately raise money to support
education in India.
Chess Club

Meets on Tuesdays at 2:18 in 252W.
Students share their interest in playing chess and prepare for possible competitions outside of
school.
Chinese Culture Club
Mr. Mansilla - World Languages
Meets every other Friday in 108E.
Students share their interest in Chinese culture and take part in special activities involving crafts,
food and music.
Classics Club
Ms. Hultgren - World Language
Meets Thursdays at 2:30 in 116E.
The Classics Club offers a great opportunity to students who are taking Latin by putting the material
to use in places other than the classroom. Members also prepare for the state and out-of-state
competitions that are likely to enhance the students’ understanding of the subject and prepare them
for other competitive events in their lives.
Common Ground
Mr. Lewis and Mr. McHale - Social Studies

Common Ground is a gay/straight alliance which works to create a comfortable, safe, and
confidential atmosphere and a respectful environment at ABRHS for all students. It is a place to
come together to discuss ideas, work on awareness activities and programs, and to just “hang out.”
Open to all interested students.
English Hour
Ms. Li - World Language

Students conduct conversation groups with adults from other countries wanting to improve their
English.
Fire and Rain
Ms. Leavitt - World Language - Liaison
Meets on Mondays at 2:30 in 118E.
Fire & Rain is A-B’s after school student-led Christian group. The group also schedules activities
outside of the weekly meetings focused on community service or having fun together. This is a
student-initiated group that is not school-sponsored or school-funded. Open to all interested
students.
Fitness Club

Meets Tuesdays and Thursdays at 2:30 in the Fitness Center.
The Acton-Boxborough Fitness Club is dedicated to student who wish to engage themselves further
into their own well-being with numerous benefits of good personal fitness.The club will have a core
that focuses on the physical and mental benefits of working out and proper nutrition and diet. Under
these umbrella terms the club will cover the safety for diet and nutrition as well as while working
out (lifting & cardio exercises), and what it means to be healthy and how to maintain a good
balance in one's life with the help of good fitness.
French Club

French Club provides an opportunity to discover more about French culture beyond the classroom.
We engage in various activities including visiting La Provence, or a French Bakery in Concord,
watching and discussing French movies and playing games in French.
Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA)
Mr. Lochrie - English
Meets first and third Wednesdays at 2:30 in 210E.
FBLA was formed to provide students interested in pursuing a career in business an opportunity to
develop skills required in the business world. It is a national organization recognized by colleges
and corporations.
The AB chapter of FBLA participates in a state convention in the fall and competes in a state wide
event in the spring which offers awards and recognition for winners.
G.I.V.E. - Girls Involved in Volunteering & Empowerment
Ms. Marsh - Science and Ms. Gabel - Counseling
Meets every other Wednesday in 170W.
Girls focus on gaining confidence and empowering themselves while giving to others.
Interact Club
Ms. DeBlois-Mello - World Languages
Meets on Thursdays at 2:30 in room 100E.
Interact is a Rotary sponsored service and social club which allows its members to develop local and
international service projects. The name Interact is derived from the words "International action".
Clubs are self governing and self supporting, offering many opportunities for members to develop
valuable leadership and teamwork skills.
Invisible Children

AB students come together each week to raise awareness and money for the epidemic problem in
Uganda. This is done by providing support and donations.
Italian Club
Ms. Buono - World Languages
Meets one Tuesday a month at 2:30 in 106E.
Students take part in Italian-related activities.
National Honor Society

The Raymond J. Grey Chapter of the National Honor Society is dedicated to creating enthusiasm for
scholarship, stimulating a desire to give service, promoting worthy leadership, and encouraging the
development of character in the students at Acton-Boxborough Regional High School. The Society
participates in many activities and provides many services to the school and surrounding
communities.
New members are inducted each spring. Juniors and seniors with at least a 3.7 GPA and meeting
certain other requirements are notified of their eligibility and asked to complete an information form
on which selection is based. The Constitution and Bylaws of the National Honor Society are
available in the main office and library.
Outdoor Club

The mission of the Outdoor Club is to provide opportunities for members to participate in group
activities in a fun, easygoing environment. Events are designed to extend an individual's
awareness, knowledge, appreciation , and enjoyment of the outdoors and build understanding for
the wise use, preservation, and respect for the outdoors and its natural beauty. Activities may
include fishing, hiking, biking, backpacking, canoeing, sea kayaking, xc-skiing, downhill skiing, snow
shoeing, rafting, camping, rock climbing, caving and trail maintenance. These activities are geared
for all levels and are designed to provide recreation and foster a better understanding of the
outdoors.
Peer Leadership Group

Meets on Wednesdays at 2:30 in 240S.
This group conducts formal presentations and small group discussions with junior high and
elementary school students about social issues such as drug use, peer pressure and social
adjustment. The peer leaders help form realistic and optimistic views of their future high school
experiences. Emphasis is placed on self-confidence and decision making in pressure situations.
Peer leaders make a personal commitment to abstain from alcohol and other drugs for the school
year.
Recycling Group
Mr. Singer - Special Education
Meets on Thursdays at 2:30 in the Commons
The recycling group provides the only school-wide recycling service at A-B. Once a week, students
collect paper, bottles, cans and containers from bins and receptacles around the school. The group
also aims to increase awareness among students, teachers and staff about the benefits of recycling
and ways to decrease wastefulness. As a new club, the recycling group is open to ideas for
promoting recycling and other environmental causes. Members must be dedicated and willing to
work to continue this service. Open to all students.
Republican Club

Students share their interest in political topics and political action.
Spanish Club
Ms. Harrison and Ms. Gardner - World Language
Meets every other Thursday at 2:30 in room 110E. Students take part in Spanish-related activities.
Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD)
Mrs. Cohen - Special Education and Mrs. Bohmiller - Special Education
Meets Wednesday at 2:30 in 167W
SADD is a student-centered organization that engages in a number of educational activities for
students and parents. Students work on a variety of activities throughout the school year to
increase awareness of the dangers of drinking and driving and other destructive decisions impacting
students and the community. Activities include SADD’s annual Mardi Gras Dance fundraiser, SADD
awareness week, Project Wellness and the seat belt safety campaign. Members are committed to
SADD and its mission and exhibit positive role models for youth in the community. Membership is
open to all students in grades 9-12 and they may join at anytime during the school year.
Tea Club

Students meet to brew and taste different teas and other activities.
TGIF Video Games
Ms. Warren - Counseling and Ms. Smith-Prather - Special Education
Meets Fridays at 2:30 in the Counseling Center
The average teenager plays 14 hours of video games per week. Most of this is spent alone or with
online friends. The TGIF video game & activity club promotes gaming in a social & supportive
environment. Video games played at the club are provided by students.
WHAB (radio station)
Mr. Drinkwater - Studio Manager

Students are involved in all aspects of the student run radio station.WHAB radio is a non
commercial/educational radio station broadcasting at 89.1FM Monday to Friday. Students who wish
to become involved in the high school radio station as an extracurricular activity may apply for wide
variety of positions that include hosting a live music program, hosting a live sports program, writing
public service announcements, producing a weekly report, production assistant, fund raising, and
more. WHAB radio is open to all students. Air shifts are scheduled for one hour per week after
school. There are also air shifts available during school.
Youth in Philanthropy
Ms. Walker - English
Meets on Mondays in room 206E.
Students attend training sessions to learn about philanthropy and non-profit organizations and then
participate in the evaluation of grant applications. Students are also responsible for participating in
fundraising activities. Members are chosen through an application process
