Student Projects

Ma ville idéale

French 3 Honors

May 2008
To conclude their unit on French cities, the students in Madame Braunegg's French 3 Honors classes were asked to design a city of their own. Each project included a spoken French presentation of about 5 minutes in length, and was accompanied by a PowerPoint slideshow or a 2- or 3-dimensional visual model. Students needed to address the areas of housing, commerce, transportation, municipal services, education, culture, nature, and recreational activities, giving the rationale behind the choices they made for their community. Each city had a particular theme, often related to an area of personal interest to the student. Presentations included cities whose layout and features centered around their location (the mountains, space, the countryside, the clouds, near the ocean, "Mudville" , Iceland, a particular ecosystem, the human body, the world of the future), favorite things (ice cream, music, sports, rollercoasters and amusement parks, helicopters, chocolate, relaxed times with friends), a particular value or philosophy (ecological consciousness and harmony with nature, privacy and meditation, the importance of energy production, the political theories of Marx and Huxley), or the veneration of the city? s founder or of an admired friend. This final project required significant preparation on the part of the students, and tested their linguistic ability, creativity, attention to detail, and ability to stay calm while addressing a group of their peers! The results were fascinating, varied, thought-provoking, and often hilarious. An impressive piece of work ? felicitations à tous!!
