Staff
Each class at the Preschool is taught by one Lead Teacher who is supported by Assistants. The number of
staff in each class depends on the number of students and the learning needs of children in the class.
Our program model incorporates the use of integrated therapies. The Speech/Language Specialists,
Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapy Assistants work in collaboration with the teaching team
to provide therapy services throughout the school day. Most therapy takes place in the classroom setting, with
the therapists working along side the teachers. All children benefit from the presence of the additional staff
in class. It enhances the learning for all and increases the staff to student ratio.
In September 2003 a center-based early childhood program for students with Autism Spectrum Disorders was initiated.
A Program Coordinator and trainors provide instruction in this setting. The staff of the Preschool and those of the ABA Program
work closely together to facilitate the inclusion of all children into the Preschool classes when they are ready.

I am a special educator who has worked in the Acton Public Schools since
1992. Prior to coming to Acton I directed an Integrated Preschool known
as the Anne Sullivan Center. In September 1994, Johanna, Debbie, Niki,
Jean and I opened the Acton Public Schools Preschool to provide a local early
childhood option for educating students with special education needs. It
is gratifying to consider the success we have had, and to have such
support from the parents, school district and community. |

I have worked for the Acton Public Schools since September 1979. I spent the first 20+ years as a Speech Language Specialist for the Merriam and Conant Elementary Schools, preschool through Grade 6. In September 1999, I joined the APS Preschool as a lead teacher Throughout the years I have enjoyed collaborating and co-teaching with many of our excellent preschool staff members in both of these roles. As a lead teacher at the preschool, I am enjoying seeing how the children learn in the context of their play while capitalizing on their enjoyment and enthusiasm for the curriculum as we practice and reinforce needed skills. Within this inclusive environment, the children really become more active participants in their play and learning, improving their skills across all areas. As lead teacher of the all day program, I am enjoying having extended time with the same group of children. The longer day provides us with more teachable moments and opportunities to help children generalize their skills and enhance their understanding. There is time for enrichment with more hands-on experiences across curriculum areas including science, math, pre-literacy and phonemic awareness skills. We are also able to help children learn how to listen, problem solve, participate and cooperate as they learn about being members of a group and social community. |

I have been working at the APS Preschool since 1999, first as a teacher assistant and then as an ABA Trainer. In 2006 I happily took on the role of Lead Teacher.
I can not imagine any other experience to be more rewarding. In this setting I am able to see children grow and progress each day. My bachelor's degree is in Special Education/Psychology. I am currently completing work at Framingham State College toward a Master's Degree in Early Childhood Education. Outside of school I enjoy photography, rubber stamping, spending time with family and friends and of course, working with children. |
Meet the Special Needs Instructors
Gabrielle Prosnitz, Speech/Language Therapist
I began working with adults and children with communication disabilities in 1978. Over time, I have worked in two hospitals and had my own private practice. I also spent one year at CASE Collaborative before moving on to Acton Public Schools. In Acton, I have had some of the most rewarding experiences of my career. I am proud to be a member of the highly talented and professional preschool staff. It is an added bonus to see the little children every day who bring laughter and joy into all of our lives.
Niki Holtzman, Occupational Therapist
I have been with the preschool since it opened originally at
the old Merriam School, as the occupational therapist. I love working
with younger students, in addition to working in the Acton Elementary
schools. We always have so much fun working together with the kids,
their parents, classroom staff and teachers, and other specialists. It is
always such a pleasure to see our students grow and mature before going on
to elementary school!
Susan DiTavi, COTA
I'm a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) and have worked at
the Preschool for 5 years. I enjoy seeing the progress the
children make throughout the year. It's a wonderful program!
