Acton-Boxborough
Acton, population 19,119, and Boxborough, with a population of 4,753, are located 25 miles west of Boston at the intersection of Routes 2 and 495. The citizens of these communities are committed to excellent schools and the parents are very involved in the education of their children.
The Acton schools are composed of two systems: The Acton Public Schools for grades K-6 and the Acton-Boxborough Regional Schools for grades 7-12. Both systems are experiencing significant growth. The systems have slightly more than 700 staff, of which approximately 350 are certified staff. Acton's five elementary schools provide 2489 students with experiences that promote the development of independence, self-esteem, self-confidence and enthusiasm for learning. The elementary program fosters physical, creative and academic skills in a developmentally and emotionally supportive environment. The system is unique in that parents can choose to send their children to any of the elementary schools. This lead to strong parental support for each school.
The secondary schools consist of R.J. Grey Junior High (7-8) with 843 students and Acton-Boxborough Regional Senior High (9-12) with 1490 students. The junior high school staff believes in a conscious and organized effort to direct the learning process and to achieve specific goals. Education is seen as the joint enterprise of the school, community and students. The high school staff believes that every student should have the opportunity to develop emotional well-being, strength of character, sensitivity to the differences and needs of others, as well as a sense of citizenship, self-worth and identity. In line with this, a variety of options and programs are offered. More than 90% of Acton-Boxborough students go on to higher education. Additionally, there is very high participation in extra- and co-curricular activities.
The Acton-Boxborough system welcomes the opportunity to become more diverse and will do what it takes to support that effort.
