Once you have found out about your topic, you can use the links provided to research your assigned ailment. Additionally, we will visit the library to find out any information those links don't provide. You must find out enough information to tell the case study story. These stories will be presented to the class in three parts:

Part I: Set Up the Story
In the first part of the case study, you will describe the patient's background and describe the symptoms the patient is showing to the doctor. You will have to describe a realistic situation in which the patient may have contracted this illness. For instance, if your case study is about malaria, you will have to explain that the patient has just come back from a part of the world where malaria occurs (and don't suggest that they just came from an Acton barbeque where they were bit by a mosquito).

At the end of Part I you will lead the class through a discussion of the following questions:
1. What symptoms does the patient show?
2. What body systems are being affected?
3. Who else may have contracted this illness/Who else might be infected?
4. What possible tests would you conduct on the patient?
5. What questions need to be asked of the patient?

The first three questions should be answerable using just the case study, the fourth and fifth question class members should answer based on their own background. You should have answers prepared for all of these questions.

Part II: The Doctor's Initial Tests

In this section you will describe at least three tests the doctor will perform and the results of those tests. You may need to give an explanation of what those tests are and what different results mean. Also, you may also describe tests that a doctor would perform to rule out certain illnesses as well as those as those what will lead to a successful diagnosis.

At the end of Part II you will lead the class through a discussion of the following questions:
1. What do the results suggest about the cause of this illness?
2. What treatments do you think should be used?
3. Do you think this ailment is curable? If so, why?
4. What other tests need should be run?
5. What questions do you want to ask the patient?

The first three questions should be answerable by making inferences from the case study, the fourth and fifth question class members should answer based on their own background. You should have answers prepared for all of these questions.

Part III: Treatment

In the final part of your case study, you will describe the treatments that the doctor will prescribe, how long it will take, and what follow up will be required by the doctor. You should explain the different options available and the advantages and disadvantages of each.

At the end of Part II you will lead the class in a discussion of the following questions:
1. Was this ailment preventable? If so, how?
2. Who else is at risk of contracting this ailment?
3. What should the patient expect to see in the future from this ailment?
4. How will the patient's lifestyle change as a result of this illness or its treatment?
5. What further research needs to be done about his ailment?

The first four questions should be answerable by making inferences from the case study, and the fifth question class members should answer based on their own background. You should have answers prepared for all of the questions.

To accompany these presentations, You will also make a powerpoint presentation with appropriate images for each section of your case. These images will show what the symptoms look like, also what equipment will be used to diagnose and treat these ailments. I highly recommend that you use Google Image Search to help find the right images for these presentations.
