After the Civil War, Acton remained a farming community with quite a few manufacturing operations. We have many wonderful images of that time period from the work of Arthur Fuller Davis, an artist who lived and painted in Acton. He walked and biked through the town with his paints and sketchbooks. The Acton Memorial Library has a wonderful on-line collection of his work and a bit about his life.
Quote from Arthur Davis Journal:
March 3, 1884 Temperature 36 Degrees
Fair day. This afternoon however snowed quite hard for an hour or two but the sunset nearly clear… Have begun on my second large picture. In this I mean to show how the average Acton Pasture looks as illustrated by the lower end of ours and the corner of Waugh’s near it.
