Acton Public Schools Special Education Program Descriptions

Kindergarten through Grade 6

Overview

Acton Public Schools offers a wide range of identification, diagnostic, educational, therapeutic and support services for students in kindergarten through grade 6.

Learning Centers

Each elementary school has a primary and intermediate special education Learning Center. Special education and related services are provided for students. Services may take place in regular education and/or special education settings. These centers service students with a wide range of special education needs.

Resource Rooms

Primary Special Education Resource Rooms: Gates, Conant, McCarthy-Towne and Merriam.

These Resource Rooms have a smaller number of students assigned and support students with significant needs who require special education support throughout most/all of their school day.

Intermediate Special Education Resource Rooms: Conant, Douglas and McCarthy-Towne.

Douglas School: Specialized instruction for a small number of students with significant learning disabilities. Students may have difficulty with reading, academics, language, organization and/or integration of information.

McCarthy-Towne: Specialized instruction and therapeutic support for a small number of students whose primary presenting disability is significant emotional and/or social needs.

Note: Students' needs are assessed on an on-going basis. In response to students' needs, new Resource Rooms may be developed and/or present Resource Rooms may be reconfigured.

Collaborative and Private Special Education Programs

Students with significant disabilities whose educational needs cannot be met within the in-district programs are served in special education programs located outside of the Acton Public Schools. Such services may be located at the Concord Area Special Education Collaborative, at other Collaboratives, or at an approved private day or residential school.
