Coastal Plain

Cape Cod and the nearby islands make up what is called a coastal plain. Glacial action created a wide variety of landscape and seascape on Cape Cod, ranging from sandy beaches, dunes and tidal flats to cliffs, marshes, ponds and woodlands. The land is mostly flat or slightly rolling. Beach plums, cranberry bushes, salt spray roses, and grasses grow here along with pines, beeches, cedars, red maples, pond lilies and cattails.

The Elizabeth Islands, Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket Island are the state's largest and most important islands. Together with Cape Cod, these islands form the boundaries of Nantucket Sound. A number of smaller islands also lie along the coast of Massachusetts.

Due to the influence of the ocean temperatures, the climate in this region is milder and fall and winter tend to be warmer than the rest of the state, but spring and summer are cooler because the ocean is still cold.
