R.J GREY COUNSELING DEPARTMENT DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Within our Department, we provide the following services:

Help students transition to the junior high and high school by providing structured opportunities for them to ask questions and gain support (examples may include meeting with them during orientation, individually, in small groups, or while they are in classroom activities).

Conduct evaluations to help with educational placements and other school-based services. These evaluations measure: cognitive abilities and intelligence, personality and social-emotional functioning, attention span, and executive functioning.

Consult regularlywith classroom teachers and parents, help construct and oversee behavioral programs, and conduct risk assessments where necessary.

Provide individual and group counseling to students with social-emotional, academic and or other issues. Students may self-refer or be referred by the Child Study Team, parents, teachers, and administrators.

Provide crisis intervention to individual students who may be in danger of hurting themselves, or others, or are in serious emotional distress.

Support crisis situations in the school setting, such as a loss in the community. In addition, we work closely with outside agencies and community organizations to provide support to our students in school and within the community.

Advocate for students with teachers and administrators and help to mediate conflicts.

Provide academic advising for students in individual, small group, and large group settings. These services range from presentations and individual meetings about course selection to individual discussions regarding workload, elective offerings, extra curricular opportunities, attendance concerns, and academic difficulty.

Guide students to begin career exploration activities so that they may develop an understanding of their personal interests, aptitudes, and possible career paths.

Provide regular consultation to and communication with the faculty and the administration regarding student needs and issues.

Communicate and collaborate with outside agencies and service providers.

Participate in the Special Education Eligibility Team process, including initial IEP evaluations, IEP re-evaluations, annual review, and periodic progress meetings.

Participation in team conferences, parent team conferences, and Child Study Team Meetings/Attendance/R.J Grey Committee meetings.

Teach classroom lessons on:

Communicate regularly with parents through phone calls, emails, parent team meetings and individual parent meetings, and monthly Shades of Grey articles.

Participate in Project Wellness, an annual day long conference of workshops for all 7th graders and their parents.
